The city of Hangzhou is gearing up for the 19th Asian Games, the biggest event it has hosted since the G20 Summit in 2016.

It is reported that over 12,000 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions will participate in the Asian Games, making it the largest ever in the event’s history.

Hangzhou authority predicted that over 20 million visitors and spectators for the games will come during the Asian Games, which coincides with an 8-day National Holiday. And the city of Hangzhou alone has over 12.3 million local residents.

This means greater challenges for the local healthcare system: How to make sure that the significantly increasing emergency rescue, critical care needs are satisfied during an international event under the spotlight? How to support professional medical facilities and teams to be better prepared for any emergency in Hangzhou and beyond?

Mindray’s team have been working with the local hospitals and NGOs to offer innovative, integrated and inter-connected solutions.

World’s First Bus-converted 5G Emergency Mobile ICU Debuts

Just few kilometers from the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium, or the “Big Lotus”, where the opening ceremony of the Asian Games will take place, Zhejiang’s top doctors at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine are standing by for any urgent medical needs.

And on September 7th, as the hospital’s very first 5G Mobile ICU got officially deployed, the doctors and nurses could offer critical care to patients on site, where and when emergency rescue are most urgently needed. It is reported that this innovative mobile ICU, converted from an EV bus, is the world’s very first of its kind.

Dr. Xu Shanxiang, Chair of Emergency Medicine and his team had been working hard to convert an EV bus into a full-functioning ICU that can provide critical care to patients and even perform emergency surgeries when needed.

“This is an integrated system with monitor, defibrillation and ultrasound functions. All the emergency rescue including vital signs monitoring, life support, initial screening and radiographing can be done here.” Dr. Xu said in an interview with CGTN.

Mindray’s innovative products, including the multi-talent BeneHeart DX defibrillator, integrating defibrillation, vital signs monitoring, ultrasound and ECG, and the TV50 transport ventilator, designed to best support patient’s transportation, are integrated in this mobile ICU. Mindray’s smart infusion system is also deployed.

With the support of M-Connect solution, all Mindray devices are integrated and coordinated, with a large touch screen showing all information needed and doctors can adjust treatment with a few touches on the screen… giving the doctors and nurses strong boost for on-site diagnosis and rescue. And more importantly, such system will greatly improve the emergency rescue efficiency and safety during patient’s transportation.

The mobile ICU is designed to offer emergency treatment for three to four patients at a time, which require high-level of integration of medical equipment on board. The bus can move to any public places with huge crowds during the Asian Games.

What’s more, the mobile ICU can be connected with the hospital via the 5G network, making real-time consultation and rescue guidance by experts possible. Doctors in the hospital, based on the live signals from the vehicle, can activate preparation work from the emergency room to operation room and later to the ICU.

In an interview with China Central Television, Dr. Wang Jian’an, President of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Chair of the Heart Center and a renowned interventional cardiologist, said the innovative mobile 5G ICU is not only prepared for the Hangzhou Asian Games, but also will be standing by for future emergency rescue, disaster relief and large-scale events.

“Moving forward, we want to better benefit the general public. More importantly, I believe that through the improvement of our ability in emergency rescue, we will further promote the level of mobile first aid in China.”

“We shall promote the concept of mobile ICU and have such innovative solutions accessible to more. We also need to further discuss the standards and rescue procedures in the future”, added Dr. Wang Jian’an.

Zaiwen Li, Senior Vice President of Mindray says “Equipped with Mindray’s innovative products, the 5G mobile ICU can not only support large-scale events like the Asian Games, but also scenarios like disaster relief. We will continue our collaboration with top experts globally to explore more possibilities for emergency medicine. And Mindray is standing by to make sure that Hangzhou’s innovative solutions are available for more in need.”

Mindray Solutions Deployed Across Hangzhou

Hangzhou is an economy-robust city and an important regional healthcare hub. With the Asian Games approaching, this innovative city and its public healthcare system are leveraging this opportunity to test the limit and pave the way for better healthcare services for the future with Asia’s gold-medal standard.

Asia’s top athletes and Paralympic athletes will compete for honor in 56 venues in Hangzhou and 5 other Zhejiang cities. Medical care support for athletes, coaches and support teams from Asian countries, as well as audiences from in and outside Zhejiang Province all require high-quality medical care.

And beyond the sports venues, the Asian Games Village, the Main Media Center also require professional medical support, which is coordinated by the 19th Asian Games Organizing Committee and delivered by the public hospital system in Zhejiang Province.

Mindray solutions are standing by together with Zhejiang’s top doctors and nurses from the public hospitals to provide in-time medical care.

The Asian Games Sailing Center in Xiangshan County of Ningbo City, the venue for the sailing contests of the Hangzhou Asian Games, is required to provide very unique first-aid work as sailing contests will take place far in the sea.

When needed, Xiangshan local professional rescue team need to rush to the sailing boats in the sea by fast boats to provide emergency medical care to the athletes on board. Mindray’s multi-functional ultrasound and vital sign monitoring mobile devices are selected by the rescue team.

If severely-injured patients were needed to be transported to the hospitals for critical care, doctors can consult with top experts in Hangzhou via a 5G smart network. The network can share real-time vitals and imaging. Such digital connections have been in place long before the Asian Games to bring the best medical minds together. Such systems are not designed specifically for big events, as local communities and residents can benefit in the long run.

To best safeguard health and be prepared for emergency, the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou Organizing Committee has installed AED devices in all 56 arenas across Zhejiang, with all staff and volunteers having been trained to perform emergency rescue.

Hangzhou, among many major cities in China, is leading the way in building a comprehensive first-aid system beneficial to the general public. Across this beautiful city, over 7,000 AEDs have been installed in the airport, train stations, subway stations, schools, shopping malls, touristic attractions and many more public buildings.

Over the years, Mindray has been working with NGOs and local health authorities to install AEDs across the city and offer first-aid training sessions. Now, Mindray’s AEDs account for over 70% of Hangzhou’s entire AED network.

Just ahead of the Asian Games, Mindray team have conducted inspections of all devices across Hangzhou. Mindray also has a mobile smart mini-app in place that tracks AED devices.
