Anantapur, July 18, 2024: The habit of consuming alcohol since the time he was in the tenth grade brought a young man close to losing his life. Due to his alcohol habit from the age of 16, the young man’s pancreas was severely damaged and decayed, leading to a life-threatening situation. As the infection had spread extensively, doctors at several hospitals in Bengaluru were reluctant to take up the case, stating that the chances of survival were almost nil even with surgery. In such a situation, doctors at KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur performed a highly complex surgery and successfully saved the patient’s life. Dr. N. Mohammed Shahid, a consultant surgical gastroenterologist at the hospital, provided details regarding the case.

“Lokesh, a 26-year-old from Hindupur, had been addicted to alcohol since his tenth grade. While some people may not face severe issues due to alcohol, others, due to their body constitution, encounter severe problems. In Lokesh’s case, fluid had accumulated around the pancreas, forming a wall-like structure, and it had led to severe infection (necrosis). Lokesh, who was studying B.Sc. Anesthesia Technology and working in the medical field, initially consulted Dr. Manoj, a medical gastroenterologist here. Dr. Manoj prescribed some medications and advised that surgery would be necessary. Consequently, the patient and his relatives took him to Bengaluru. They visited three to four major hospitals there. The doctors stated that without surgery, the chances of survival were almost nil, and even with surgery, 60-70% of patients die. Those who survive would also face various issues for the rest of their lives. Due to this complexity, none of the doctors in Bengaluru hospitals were willing to take up the case. The infection had spread extensively, the heart rate had significantly increased, and blood pressure had dropped. The pancreas was completely damaged and had to be removed. As the infection had spread to the intestines, a stoma was performed as a precautionary measure, which will be reversed in another two to three months.

After this surgery, Lokesh completely recovered. However, removing the pancreas means he will definitely develop diabetes in the future. There is also a risk of infections spreading. He will need to use either tablets or insulin for diabetes management. He must completely abstain from alcohol and take precautions to prevent infections,” explained Dr. Mohammed Shahid.

In major cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru, such surgeries typically cost around ₹10 lakhs. However, it was performed at KIMS Saveera Hospital for just ₹2 lakhs.
