Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today drew national attention to one of the growing public health challenges confronting India—obesity. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister described obesity not merely as an individual public health concern, but as a multifaceted issue with profound implications for the nation’s productivity, healthcare burden, and future generations.
“India has overcome many diseases and is advancing rapidly toward a healthy and prosperous future. Yet, today, lifestyle-related disorders such as obesity are silently emerging as new challenges before our society. We cannot allow these modern habits to weaken our nation’s strength,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting the fact that India’s youthful demographic is the country’s greatest strength, Shri Modi emphasized that safeguarding the health of young citizens is crucial for sustaining economic growth and social well-being. With changes in diet patterns, reduced physical activity, and urban lifestyles, the risk of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease has grown sharply.
The Prime Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to building a preventive healthcare ecosystem through campaigns such as Fit India Movement and Ayushman Bharat. He called upon citizens, schools, urban planners, healthcare providers, and food industries to play an active role in ensuring healthier choices for all communities.
“Fitness should not be seen as a luxury—it must become a daily necessity. A fit and aware society will lay the foundation for a healthy and empowered India,” PM Modi stated. He urged parents to instill healthy habits early in children’s lives, encouraged urban developers to design more spaces for sports and physical activity, and appealed to the food industry to promote nutritional awareness.
The Prime Minister also underlined the need for a balanced approach that respects India’s traditional diet wisdom and integrates it with modern knowledge. “Our ancestors gave us simple, wholesome, and seasonal diets that kept generations healthy. By blending this heritage with scientific insights, we can build a strong shield against lifestyle diseases,” he said.
The Government of India is set to expand awareness campaigns on obesity, encourage regular health checkups, and strengthen programs for nutrition awareness in schools and workplaces. These measures, combined with individual and community efforts, aim to reduce the rising burden of lifestyle disorders and create a more resilient healthcare system.
“Let us move together—from illness to wellness, from awareness to action. Just as India is leading in technology and economy, let us also lead the world in health and fitness,” the Prime Minister concluded
