New Delhi, March 17, 2026: In a significant move to strengthen public healthcare delivery, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced plans to integrate three major government hospitals into an AIIMS-style “super medical hub.”
The proposed initiative will bring together Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital under a single, autonomous institutional framework, modelled on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Focus on Better Access and Efficiency
Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), CM Gupta stated that the integration aims to enhance patient care by improving coordination between hospitals and optimising available resources.
“This will increase bed availability, simplify the process of tests and referrals, and reduce waiting times so that every patient can receive timely, fast, and better treatment,” she said.
The initiative is part of a broader vision to create a modern, patient-centric healthcare ecosystem in Delhi, where multiple specialities and advanced medical services are accessible within a single integrated system.
Addressing Uneven Patient Load
The move comes amid challenges related to uneven patient distribution across Delhi’s government hospitals.
Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital is currently handling more than its sanctioned capacity of around 1,400 beds due to heavy patient inflow
In contrast, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, which has a capacity of about 650 beds, is operating only around 250 beds, leaving a large portion underutilised
By consolidating these hospitals into a unified system, the government aims to balance patient load, improve efficiency, and ensure optimal utilisation of infrastructure and medical expertise.
Towards a Unified Healthcare System
According to the Chief Minister, the integrated “super medical hub” will function as an autonomous and empowered institution, enabling better management of doctors, specialists, equipment, and facilities.
The initiative is expected to:
- Improve access to specialised and tertiary care
- Streamline diagnostic and referral processes
- Enhance quality of treatment
- Reduce waiting times for patients
The model is designed to serve not only residents of Delhi but also patients from neighbouring regions who depend on the capital for advanced medical care.
Strengthening Public Healthcare Infrastructure
The proposed AIIMS-style hub marks a strategic step towards building a more robust and reliable public healthcare system in Delhi. By leveraging existing infrastructure and integrating key institutions, the government aims to deliver high-quality, efficient, and accessible healthcare services at scale.
