India is rapidly positioning itself as a global pharmaceutical powerhouse, with Union Minister Jitendra Singh stating that the country is emerging as a robust pharma economy poised to drive future growth across innovation, manufacturing, and global healthcare supply chains.
Speaking at a recent industry forum, Jitendra Singh highlighted India’s expanding capabilities in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and research, underscoring the nation’s growing role in ensuring affordable and accessible medicines worldwide.
India currently ranks among the largest producers of generic medicines globally, supplying nearly 20% of the world’s generic drug demand and playing a critical role in global health systems. The country is also a leading supplier of vaccines, contributing significantly to international immunization programmes.
The Indian pharmaceutical industry is valued at approximately $50 billion, with projections indicating growth to $130 billion by 2030, driven by increased domestic demand, export expansion, and advancements in research and development. India’s pharma exports currently reach over 200 countries, reinforcing its position as a trusted global supplier.
The minister emphasized that government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and support for bulk drug parks are strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and reducing import dependence. These initiatives are also encouraging innovation and investment across the pharmaceutical value chain.
India’s growing focus on biopharmaceuticals, biosimilars, and digital health integration is expected to further accelerate sectoral growth. The government is also promoting research-driven development, startup ecosystems, and public-private partnerships to foster innovation.
Jitendra Singh noted that the convergence of policy support, skilled workforce, and technological advancement positions India as a key player in shaping the future of global healthcare.
Industry experts believe that with sustained investment, regulatory reforms, and innovation-led growth, India is well on track to become a leading global hub for pharmaceuticals and life sciences, contributing significantly to both economic growth and global health security.
