In a move to promote preventive healthcare and in-flight wellness, the Ministry of AYUSH has introduced a 5-minute “smart yoga” routine for air travellers, aimed at reducing fatigue, stiffness, and stress during long-haul flights.
The initiative, titled “Yoga for Air Travel”, was launched during Yoga Mahotsav 2026 and has been developed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. It is designed as a simple, safe, and time-efficient protocol that can be performed while seated, without the need for any special equipment.
Air travel, especially long duration flights, often leads to prolonged immobility, resulting in muscle stiffness, poor circulation, fatigue, jet lag, and in some cases, increased risk of conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
The newly introduced yoga routine addresses these challenges through a structured sequence that includes:
• Centring and mindful awareness
• Gentle joint movements such as shoulder rotations and ankle stretches
• Seated yoga postures including spinal twists and modified asanas
• Breathing techniques (pranayama) like Anulom Vilom and Bhramari
• Short meditation for relaxation
These practices collectively help improve blood circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, ease stress and anxiety, and support better management of jet lag and fatigue.
Officials emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of integrating yoga into everyday life and promoting accessible preventive healthcare, even in constrained environments such as aircraft cabins.
The Ministry highlighted that such interventions are particularly relevant in today’s context of increasing air travel and sedentary lifestyles, where maintaining physical and mental well-being during journeys has become essential.
Experts note that the introduction of in-flight wellness protocols could also encourage airlines and travellers to adopt health-focused practices, improving overall travel experience and reducing health risks associated with prolonged sitting.
With this initiative, the Ministry of AYUSH continues to advance its mission of making holistic wellness practices more accessible, practical, and adaptable to modern lifestyles, reinforcing India’s global leadership in yoga and preventive healthcare.
