New Delhi,: India is gearing up for a major leap in AI-enabled healthcare transformation, with a national policy on artificial intelligence in healthcare currently under development, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority (NHA).
Speaking at a recent industry forum, the NHA CEO stated that the proposed policy aims to establish a comprehensive framework for the adoption, regulation, and scaling of AI technologies across the healthcare ecosystem. The initiative is expected to ensure safe, ethical, and effective deployment of AI in clinical and operational settings.
The upcoming policy will likely address key areas such as data governance, patient privacy, interoperability, validation of AI tools, and standardization protocols, while promoting innovation in areas including diagnostics, treatment planning, predictive analytics, and hospital management.
Officials highlighted that artificial intelligence holds significant potential to improve early disease detection, clinical decision-making, workflow efficiency, and patient outcomes, particularly in a country with diverse healthcare needs and resource constraints. However, the need for robust regulatory oversight and quality assurance mechanisms remains critical to ensure responsible and scalable implementation.
The policy is also expected to encourage public-private partnerships, research and development, and capacity building, creating a strong ecosystem for AI innovation in healthcare. It will further align with national initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) to enable seamless integration of AI-driven solutions within India’s digital health infrastructure.
Experts believe that a well-defined national AI policy will help address challenges related to data security, algorithm bias, and interoperability, while accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies across hospitals, diagnostics, and public health programs.
The development reflects India’s broader vision of building a technology-driven, accessible, and efficient healthcare system, positioning the country as a potential global leader in AI-powered healthcare innovation.
