Google has expanded its artificial intelligence (AI) healthcare initiatives in India by strengthening its collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to develop AI models for leprosy and reproductive health, while introducing new open source technologies to support the country’s digital public health ecosystem.

Building on earlier AI applications for dermatology and outpatient triage, the expanded partnership aims to develop clinically validated AI tools that can improve early disease detection, clinical decision making and access to quality healthcare, particularly in underserved communities. The company said the initiatives are designed to make AI technologies more accessible to healthcare providers, researchers and public health institutions.

The announcements were made during Google’s India focused AI event, where the technology company unveiled a series of initiatives across healthcare, education, language accessibility and enterprise AI infrastructure. Healthcare emerged as a key focus area, reflecting India’s growing adoption of artificial intelligence to strengthen public health delivery and digital innovation.

Google also announced support for India’s digital health ecosystem through open source AI technologies, enabling developers, researchers and healthcare organisations to build scalable AI-powered healthcare solutions. The initiative aligns with India’s broader efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into healthcare through programmes such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

Healthcare experts believe AI has the potential to transform disease screening, diagnostics and healthcare delivery by enabling faster, more accurate clinical decisions while improving access to specialist care. AI-based tools are increasingly being explored for conditions such as tuberculosis, diabetic retinopathy, skin diseases, cancer and maternal health, helping bridge healthcare gaps in resource constrained settings.

The expanded collaboration underscores Google’s growing investment in India’s healthcare innovation ecosystem and is expected to accelerate the development of responsible, AI-driven solutions that support public health, medical research and digital healthcare transformation across the country.
