In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian cardiac surgery, Manipal Hospital Kanakapura Road has
successfully performed India& 39;s first 3rd generation sutureless aortic valve replacement using
Lancelot technology.
Mrs. Annapoornamma, 66 years old, had been dealing with episodes of giddiness and breathlessness
(dyspnoea) for roughly half a year. These symptoms had progressed considerably in the last month,
significantly affecting her overall quality of life. Recurrent episodes of syncope, characterized by
sudden loss of consciousness, suggested serious cardiac compromise, thereby posing an immediate
risk to her heart health.
Clinical evaluation subsequently identified severe calcific aortic stenosis, a potentially fatal ailment
where there is severe narrowing of the aortic valve, which in turn imposes critically high pressure on
the heart. Mrs. Annapoornamma was under the care of Dr. Pavankumar P Rasalkar, Consultant
Interventional Cardiology, who then recommended her to Dr. Murali Krishna, Consultant
Cardiothoracic Surgery, because it was observed that a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement
(AVR) with a sutureless valve would be preferable rather than transcatheter options, considering
the condition and overall risk profile. She underwent the procedure with no complications,
becoming the first patient in India to receive this cutting edge technology.
