Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually inaugurated a new 220-bedded Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in Surat, marking a significant milestone in strengthening healthcare infrastructure for India’s organised workforce and their families.

Built at a cost of ₹216 crore, the state of the art healthcare facility is spread across an 8.60-acre campus and is expected to serve approximately 3.20 lakh insured persons and nearly 12.16 lakh beneficiaries in Surat and surrounding regions. The hospital has been developed to enhance access to affordable, quality healthcare services under the ESIC framework.

Describing the project as a major healthcare milestone for Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure and improving access to medical services for workers covered under the Employees’ State Insurance Scheme.

The newly inaugurated hospital is equipped to provide comprehensive healthcare services, including outpatient care, inpatient treatment, emergency services, diagnostic facilities, specialty consultations, and advanced medical care. Healthcare experts believe the facility will significantly reduce the burden on existing hospitals while improving healthcare accessibility for industrial workers and their dependents.

The inauguration aligns with the government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery through infrastructure expansion, medical technology adoption, and increased healthcare investments. Over the past decade, India has witnessed substantial growth in healthcare infrastructure, including new medical colleges, hospitals, and digital health initiatives.

The ESIC healthcare network plays a vital role in providing social security and medical benefits to workers employed in the organised sector. Through its hospitals, dispensaries, and empanelled healthcare facilities, the scheme serves millions of beneficiaries across the country.

Healthcare analysts note that Surat’s growing industrial base and workforce population have increased the demand for accessible and specialized healthcare services. The new ESIC hospital is expected to address this need by providing comprehensive treatment closer to beneficiaries’ workplaces and residences.

Officials believe the facility will improve healthcare outcomes, reduce out of pocket medical expenses, and strengthen social protection for insured workers and their families. The hospital also reflects the government’s focus on expanding healthcare access beyond metropolitan centres.

With a capacity of 220 beds and the ability to serve more than 12 lakh beneficiaries, the new ESIC Hospital in Surat is expected to become a key healthcare hub for the region and contribute significantly to Gujarat’s healthcare ecosystem.
