Medical professionals and healthcare associations have raised serious concerns over the increasing incidence of violence, verbal abuse and threats against healthcare workers in hospitals and healthcare facilities across India, calling for stronger legal protections, improved reporting systems and enhanced security measures to safeguard frontline medical personnel.

 

Doctors and healthcare workers have stated that incidents of verbal abuse, intimidation, threats and physical assaults have become increasingly common in healthcare settings, particularly in emergency departments, district hospitals, intensive care units and other high pressure clinical environments. However, many such incidents remain unreported due to concerns over administrative burden, lack of institutional support and inadequate reporting mechanisms.

 

Medical professionals have also highlighted the absence of comprehensive state level data on workplace violence in healthcare, making it difficult to accurately assess the scale and nature of the problem. Experts argue that the lack of standardized reporting systems has hindered the development of effective policies and preventive interventions.

 

Several studies conducted in India and globally have identified workplace violence against healthcare workers as a major occupational hazard. According to published research, more than 70 percent of healthcare professionals in India have experienced some form of workplace violence during their careers, with verbal abuse accounting for the majority of incidents. Emergency medicine specialists, resident doctors, nurses and healthcare workers in public hospitals are considered particularly vulnerable.

 

Healthcare experts note that factors contributing to violence in healthcare settings include overcrowding, long waiting times, resource constraints, poor communication, high patient expectations and emotional distress among patients’ families. They emphasize that violence against healthcare professionals not only affects the physical and mental well-being of healthcare workers but can also negatively impact patient care and healthcare delivery systems.

 

Medical associations have called for stronger legal frameworks, stricter enforcement of existing laws, mandatory reporting mechanisms and improved security infrastructure in hospitals. They have also advocated for increased public awareness campaigns to promote respect for healthcare professionals and strengthen trust between patients and healthcare providers.

 

WHO has recognized violence against healthcare workers as a significant global public health and occupational safety issue, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies that include prevention, reporting, legal protection and institutional support. Healthcare experts believe that addressing workplace violence requires coordinated action involving governments, healthcare institutions, law enforcement agencies and civil society organizations.

 

The growing concerns expressed by healthcare professionals highlight the urgent need for robust policies and effective implementation mechanisms to ensure safe working environments for doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers. Experts stress that protecting healthcare personnel is essential not only for workforce well-being but also for maintaining the quality, resilience and sustainability of healthcare systems.
