The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported more than 2,000 confirmed Ebola cases, with the death toll rising to 754, as health authorities continue to intensify containment efforts amid one of the country’s most significant Ebola outbreaks in recent years. The latest figures highlight the continuing public health challenge posed by the highly infectious virus.

According to the Ministry of Health, the outbreak has resulted in over 2,000 laboratory confirmed infections, while 753 patients remain in isolation or are receiving treatment in hospitals. So far, 366 people have recovered, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen case management, surveillance and supportive care.

Health authorities, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, have expanded contact tracing, laboratory testing, infection prevention measures, community surveillance and vaccination campaigns to contain the spread of the virus. Rapid identification and isolation of suspected cases remain central to the outbreak response.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever transmitted through direct contact with infected body fluids or contaminated materials. Symptoms include high fever, severe weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding. According to WHO, Ebola outbreaks have historically recorded case fatality rates ranging from 25% to 90%, depending on the virus species, healthcare access and timeliness of treatment.

Public health experts stressed that early diagnosis, prompt isolation, safe burial practices and community engagement are essential to interrupt transmission. They also highlighted the critical role of ring vaccination strategies and cross border surveillance in preventing the spread of the disease.

The latest figures underscore the need for sustained international support to strengthen outbreak response, protect frontline healthcare workers and ensure timely access to diagnostics, vaccines and treatment as the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues efforts to bring the Ebola outbreak under control.
