The incidence of this tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a congenital cardiac disease is 0.34 % per 1000 live births in the world. It is a rare congenital heart disease where there is the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the heart because of a hole ~

~This patient had abnormal positions of the aorta and pulmonary artery, stenosis in the pulmonary valve, and a hole in the atrial septum and ventricular septum. On exertion or walking his skin color used to become blue and was breathless. He never used to play in school or at home because of fear of breathlessness~

A team led by Dr Abhay Jain, Cardiac Surgeon, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai saved the life of a 14-year-old boy from Yemen detected with congenital cardiac disease. The patient with symptoms such as fatigue and cyanosis, that is the skin, lips, or nails turning blue due to a lack of oxygen in the blood by birth successfully underwent intracardiac repair surgery. Immediately after surgery, the patient saturation improved from 75% to 100 %. He was kept in the ICU for 3 days and inward for 2 days. After surgery, when his mother saw him she cried into tears saying she discovered that he was so fair that he couldn’t see his original color due to his bluish skin.

Patient Yousef Saleh Awadh Mahdi had complaints such as fatigue and cyanosis, which is the skin, lips, or nails turning blue due to a lack of oxygen in the blood by birth. He was on medical management since birth and the final treatment for him was surgery.    His health deteriorated further as breathlessness and cyanosis increased with advance in his age. The patient came to Dr Abhay Jain after consulting him online and came to Medicover Hospital 15 days back before surgery.

Dr Abhay Jain, Cardiac Surgeon, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai said, “The baby presented to me with complaints of breathlessness, fatigability, and cyanosed that is a blue tint on the skin (fingers, toes, and lips), a saturation of 75 %.  His 2D Echo test was done after admission to the hospital. The baby was found to have Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF) or blue baby syndrome which led to reduced blood flow to the lungs. This rare congenital cardiac disease is 0.34 % per 1000 live births in the world. One with this disease will have a mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the heart because of a hole.  Due to the high level of carbon dioxide in his body, his body turned blue. TOF must be repaired to save and improve one’s quality of life. So, intracardiac repair (VSD closure with the savage patch, infundibular resection with MPA, RVOT augmentation with the auto pericardial patch, and PDA interruption was done to close the hole and improve blood flow to the lungs. 8 hrs of uneventful surgery last. The symptoms such as blueness of the skin, fatigue, and breathlessness have settled after the surgery. He was in the ICU for 3 days and inward for 2 days and was discharged 7th March. He is recuperating well and will resume going to the school soon. Not treating him at the right time could have led to low SPO2, neurological problems, and ultimately death.”

“We were appalled to see our child struggling for 14 years with constant fatigue and bluish skin that was the topic of discussion among everyone. We were subjected to constant questions about our child’s health. He would refrain from going to school or any social gathering due to embarrassment and the fear of being ridiculed by others. We are fortunate to have received timely treatment at Medicover Hospital and thank the team of doctors who saved my baby’s life. After suffering for 14 years, my child will be able to live the life he has always dreamt of. He can now play or do activities that he likes, without the fear of getting breathless,” concluded the father of the patient.
