Aakash Healthcare completes 100 Kidney Transplant benchmark

The cases of people suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is seeing an alarming 20 percent per year increase. Couple that with the fact that doctors are unable to put a finger to the causes that have led to CKD in as many as 30 percent cases. Many such startling revelations came to light after doctors at Aakash Healthcare looked back at the journey of a landmark 100 Kidney Transplants (KTP).

The 20 percent yearly increase in CKD is something that the doctors at Aakash Healthcare feel must be taken note of. The reasons the doctors feel could be multiple, from poor lifestyle, to late detection, pollution and more.

According to the figures the doctors at Aakash Healthcare got after 100 KTPs, co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension is the major cause of CKD in elderly (about 30 percent), another major chunk is made of patients needing KTPs due to congenital or genetic reasons (another 30-35 patients).  Dr Vikram Kalra, Additional Director & Sr. Consultant, Nephrology & Renal Transplantation, Aakash Healthcare, says, “The root cause of CKD in about 30 percent of the patients is unknown.  The causes could be anything from pollution, contaminated water, poor diet or lifestyle. This is very worrisome and hence more research is needed in this aspect.”

100 KTPs at the Aakash Healthcare have revealed a lot more. Dr Kalra says further, “We found out that more females donate kidney to their family members when compared with the males in the family. This has social reasons as male are considered to be earning members and are therefore are protected more. But then we come across some interesting exceptions too. Such as a case where a kidney was donated by a father-in-law to his daughter-in-law.”

On being asked about the most challenging KTPs conducted at the hospital Dr. Vikas Agarwal, Director & HOD – Urology, Uro-oncology and Kidney Transplant, Aakash Healthcare  mentions several high risk KTP procedures such as paediatric transplants, post cardiac surgery transplants, second transplants, that is, transplants on patients who already had a KTP done, Kidney transplants where donors and the recipient had different antibodies and different blood group KTPs. “We have done all high risk KTPs with anextremely low rejection rate,” informed Dr Aggarwal.

Dr Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director, Aakash Healthcare says, “At Aakash Healthcare, we have a robust infrastructure that enables doctors to perform successful transplants.  It’s a matter of great satisfaction that we have completed 100 KTP’s at Aakash Healthcare.  We feel it is important to create social awareness on cadaver & brain dead donors and how it can help patients relive their lives.”
