Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister is set to inaugurate the newly constructed ₹98 crore super specialty block at Government General Hospital, Kakinada, on 18th June, significantly strengthening tertiary healthcare infrastructure in the East Godavari region. The state government has additionally sanctioned ₹11 crore for civil construction enhancements and ₹27 crore for advanced medical equipment, taking the total healthcare investment for the project to approximately ₹136 crore.
The newly developed healthcare block has a capacity of 465 beds and is designed to improve critical care, maternal health, neonatal services, and emergency treatment facilities at one of Andhra Pradesh’s largest government hospitals. Officials stated that the project aims to reduce patient burden on major referral hospitals in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada while improving access to advanced treatment in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
According to health department sources, the facility includes:
465 in-patient beds
Dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) floor
Advanced laminar flow systems for infection controlled neonatal care
Modern operation theatres and critical care units
Upgraded oxygen pipeline infrastructure
Centralized air conditioning and modular medical systems
Enhanced diagnostic and emergency response facilities
The neonatal section is expected to become one of the most advanced government-run pediatric care units in Andhra Pradesh, equipped to handle high-risk births and critical infant care cases across the region.
Healthcare officials said Kakinada GGH currently caters to lakhs of patients annually from East Godavari, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and neighboring districts. The addition of the new block is projected to increase inpatient treatment capacity by nearly 35–40% while improving emergency and specialty healthcare delivery.
The Andhra Pradesh government has been accelerating healthcare infrastructure expansion under its public health modernization initiatives, with investments focused on tertiary hospitals, medical colleges, ICU capacity, and maternal child healthcare services across the state.
The inauguration is expected to witness participation from senior health officials, district administrators, public representatives, and medical faculty associated with Rangaraya Medical College and Government General Hospital, Kakinada.
