New York/Washington, October 7, 2026: Medical technology company Becton Dickinson (BD) has announced plans to invest approximately $19 billion in the United States over the coming years, including a dedicated $3 billion commitment toward expanding domestic manufacturing capacity.
The investment comes as the US government continues to encourage healthcare and medical technology companies to strengthen domestic production and reduce dependence on overseas supply chains.
Under the newly announced agreement, BD’s manufacturing plans could also be linked to potential exemptions or relief from certain future Section 232 tariffs applicable to medical products and related inputs. The extent of any tariff relief will depend on the final rules, product categories covered and the company’s progress against agreed investment and manufacturing milestones.
BD Targets Higher Domestic Production
BD said the planned investment is expected to significantly expand its manufacturing footprint in the US. As part of the initiative, the company expects to increase domestic production of essential medical consumables by approximately 5 billion units annually.
The expansion could take the share of these products supplied from US-based manufacturing facilities to nearly 80%, strengthening the company’s domestic supply capabilities.
Another major component of the plan involves the production of needles used in the US. BD has committed to manufacturing the needles required for the American market domestically, with production based on US-made steel.
Tom Polen, Chief Executive Officer of Becton Dickinson, said the agreement is aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure, increasing manufacturing capabilities and improving the reliability of medical technology supplies across the country.
$3 Billion Manufacturing Investment
The $3 billion manufacturing allocation is not BD’s first recent investment in US production. The company has already been expanding capacity at several facilities across the country.
In January, BD announced an investment of approximately $110 million in Columbus, Nebraska, to increase production capabilities for prefillable syringes and cannulas. Syringe manufacturing from the expanded facility was scheduled to begin supplying customers during mid-2026.
BD currently has manufacturing operations in multiple US locations, including Nebraska, Connecticut, Texas, Georgia, Utah and South Carolina, along with facilities in Puerto Rico.
The company’s manufacturing portfolio covers a broad range of healthcare products, including syringes, catheters, endoscopy-related systems and other medical devices and consumables used by healthcare providers.
Tariff Impact Still Uncertain
While the investment agreement provides BD with greater visibility for its long-term manufacturing and supply-chain planning, the company has not yet disclosed the expected financial impact.
The uncertainty is largely linked to the final structure of the proposed Section 232 tariffs, including the products and materials that may ultimately fall under the measures, applicable tariff rates and the timeline for implementation.
As the US administration continues to finalize its trade and manufacturing policies, BD said additional information about the agreement and its financial implications will become clearer once the tariff framework is established.
The latest commitment represents a significant expansion of BD’s manufacturing strategy in the United States and reflects the growing focus on strengthening domestic production of critical healthcare supplies.
By increasing local manufacturing capacity, the company aims to build a more resilient supply network while supporting the availability of essential medical products for the US healthcare system.
