Onco Lifecare Cancer Center, a prominent healthcare facility located in Chiplun, has completed 35 Head and Neck Surgeries (22 males and 13 females) over the past one-and-half-year. The institution’s primary goal was to ensure disease-free survival and achieve an almost negligible recurrence in Surgical Oncology, comprising Commando surgeries, Thyroid surgeries, Parotid surgeries, and Larynx surgeries. Onco Lifecare Cancer Center has added another feather to its cap in the Konkan region with this significant achievement.

In India Head and Neck Cancers are the most common cancers among men, 4th among women, and rank second overall. There is wide variation in the incidence and anatomy distribution of Head and Neck cancers in India compared to Western Countries. India with a population of 140 Crore estimate indicates India’s reported cancer incidence in 2022 to be 19 to 20 lacs, whereas real incidence is 1.5 to 3 times higher than the reported cases as per EY report of 2022. The main risk factors for this cancer are tobacco and alcohol consumption.

“Head and Neck Cancers constitute 30% of all Cancers because of the widespread use of Tobacco in India. 50-60% of Head and Neck Cancers are usually present in locally advanced stages.  With a population size of approximately 35 lacs (Ratnagiri District, Sindhudurg District, and Southern Part of Raigad), the new cancer patients incidence is expected to be 7000 – 8000 in a year.  Over the past one-and-a-half-year, 35 patients received life-saving medical intervention, with 22 being male and 13 female. The patients were categorized based on their cancer stage, with 8 in stage 1, 5 in stage 2, 6 in stage 3, and 16 in the advanced stage (stage 4). Looking at the current sample size of 35 patients who underwent surgery 45-50% percent of the patients come in Stage -4, which corresponds with the national data. Treatment involves a Multi-Disciplinary Team consisting of Surgical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists Medical Oncologists, and Support staff. The Head and Neck Surgical Oncology department provides personalized treatment for patients with both benign and malignant tumors of various areas including the skin salivary gland, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, and parathyroid glands,” said  Dr Ehsan Shaikh, Head & Neck Onco Surgeon, Onco Lifecare Cancer Center, Chiplun.

Dr Ehsan added, “When looking at Head and Neck Cancers from a surgical standpoint, the primary focus is on completely removing the disease to achieve improved aesthetic and functional results. While there is a chance of the cancer returning after surgery, utilizing advanced radiotherapy and personalized medical oncology approaches can greatly reduce the likelihood of recurrence. It is crucial in today’s context to prioritize regular screening and early detection of the disease by a qualified doctor.”
