In a remarkable display of medical expertise and courage, Aster MIMS has once again emerged as a shining example in the field of healthcare by successfully removing the largest fibroid ever reported in India. The successful operation of a peculiar fibroid partly bulging out of a 42- year-old lady’s vagina by the skilled medical team at Aster MIMS is a testament to the incredible advancements in medical technology and the unwavering commitment of healthcare professionals to saving lives.

The patient from Wayanad district was admitted to the Aster MIMS with severe abdominal pain. Upon examination, the doctors found that the fibroid had grown to 30 cm in length and 15 cm in width, with 12 cm of it bulging out of her vagina. The growth was from the roof of the uterus, which made the surgery even more challenging.

“Fibroids are tumours arising from the womb. Seen in around 20%of women. They are generally non- cancerous. Usually presents with heavy menstrual bleeding or feeling of the mass abdomen. They can grow to big size filling the abdomen. Fibroids can be removed by laparoscopy ( keyhole surgery). Embolisation (blocking of the blood supply)can be done in selected cases. But this case was peculiar in terms of its size and presentation,“ said Dr. Nazer Thalamkandathil, Prof. & Head -Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

The medical team at Aster MIMS quickly mobilized to provide the patient with the necessary care and attention. After a thorough evaluation and discussion with the patient, the team of gynaecologists decided to operate on the fibroid, which posed a life-threatening risk to the patient. The surgery (Hysterectomy) was performed successfully, and the patient was closely monitored throughout her recovery period. The Weight of the tumour removed was 4.1 kg.

This was not the first time the patient had faced a medical challenge. Fifteen years prior, she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which she had overcome after successful treatment. The patient was found to have another fibroid during a subsequent examination, but that surgery was not successful.

The patient’s determination and the commitment of the medical team at Aster MIMS played a vital role in the successful outcome of this latest surgery. The procedure was conducted using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, ensuring the highest level of precision and safety. The team involved were Dr. Nazer T, Prof. & Head, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dr. Rasheeda Beegam O, Prof & Senior Consultant, Gynaecology, Dr. Salim VP, Senior Consultant & Head – Surgical Oncology, Dr Ayisha Warda (Anaesthesia) and Ms Athishaya, Staff Nurse at Aster MIMS.

The patient was recovered fully and discharged after a short span of hospital stay.
