Qure’s AI solution for Chest X-ray won the AI Game Changer Award under the Global Health Category during the GPAI 2023 Summit

Qure.ai, a leading AI solutions provider for imaging technology, secured the first prize at the AI Gamechanger Awards held during the 2023 Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit. The summit, chaired by India, featured a shark-tank-like event showcasing pitches from various AI startups across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and gene mapping.

The AI Gamechanger Awards aimed to recognize innovation in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence across diverse sectors. Qure.ai, as the winner in the Global Health category, shared the prize with Neodocs Healthcare, a provider of instant lab tests on smartphones.

Qure’s winning solution, qXR software for Chest X-rays, offers AI-based chest X-ray interpretation instantaneously and can spot up to 30 lung abnormalities, including signs of pulmonary TB, lung nodules, and other ailments. By integrating qXR within the existing healthcare framework, the healthcare providers were able to amplify the accuracy and reach of TB screening using everyday chest X-rays. Enhanced by Qure’s AI enabled lung health suite of solutions, we have demonstrated an increase of 25% in patient detection through incidental screening. This is in addition to the TB cases detected through active case finding initiatives with Qure’s qXR.

Upon successful implementation, the solution was able to bring about a transformative change in the detection and management of Tuberculosis (TB) in underserved areas. With the enhanced screening capabilities, it allowed the healthcare providers to:

  • Accelerated Triage: Efficiently directing potential TB-positive cases for further testing and diagnosis.
  • Enhanced Detection: With AI’s assistance, there was potential for increased detection of TB cases, especially in settings where specialized diagnostic expertise might be scarce.
  • AI enabled solution also helps in detecting TB cases through unconventional pathways like routine health checkups.
  • Infection Control: Reducing the risk of TB transmission and limiting healthcare staff’s exposure to the disease, thereby safeguarding the health of both patients and healthcare providers.
  • Capacity Building: Empowering frontline and non-specialized healthcare workers with the necessary tools and knowledge to utilize AI for TB screening, thus fostering a self-sustaining model of care.
  • Evidence Creation: Establishing a robust body of evidence on the use of AI for integrated TB screening and demonstrating the effectiveness of qXR as a clinical decision support tool.

Qure’s lung health suite of solutions is a perfect example of a harmonious blend of innovation, AI technology, healthcare knowledge, and stakeholder dedication, working collectively to improve respiratory disease detection like TB. It underlined the potential of AI in bridging diagnosis gaps, especially in limited-resource scenarios, playing a crucial role in advancing toward TB elimination objectives.

The jury for the event consisted of leading experts from science, technology, and civil society, including S Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, along with Additional MeitY Secretary, Abhishek Singh. Other jury members included Harshjit Sethi, Peak XV partner; Arpit Agarwal, Investment Partner, Blume Ventures, and Howard Lacuna, Senior Program Officer, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as well as tech evangelist Pankaj Thakkar and Anirudh Suri, India Internet Fund were also present. Ms. Kavitha Bhatia, Group Coordinator, Emerging Technologies was also a part of the judging panel.

Qure’s win underscores the company’s commitment to revolutionizing healthcare by leveraging cutting-edge AI technology. The company’s mission of making quality healthcare more accessible and equitable aligns seamlessly with the vision of the GPAI Summit, which emphasizes building a trust-based AI ecosystem.

The company was also part of a fireside chat with Union Minister Shri Rajeev Chandrashekar on the topic of the Government’s strategy for supporting a vibrant startup ecosystem for AI. The session delved deeper into how policy frameworks can be structured to nurture AI startups in India, ensuring they have the necessary resources and regulatory backing to flourish. The conversations revolved around the importance of having policy meet innovation and where the vision of industry should align with government strategies.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the win, Prashant Warier, Co-Founder & CEO, Qure.ai, remarked, “This recognition from the government of India at the GPAI Summit 2023 is a testament to our dedication to transforming patient care through innovative AI solutions. Moreover, the event was also a momentous occasion for the Qure team as they were honored with the opportunity to present their impactful contributions to the honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, further highlighting the significance of our work in advancing healthcare through advanced technology. We are grateful for the support of our team, partners, and the industry, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of improving patient care in India and globally. “

The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) is a multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice on AI by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities. Launched in June 2020 with 15 members, today GPAI’s membership has expanded to 28 member countries and the European Union (EU). As one of the founding members of GPAI in 2020, the current incoming Support Chair of GPAI, and the Lead Chair for GPAI in 2024, India hosted the Annual GPAI Summit in New Delhi from December 12-14, 2023. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on December 12, 2023.

As the chair for the GPAI in 2024, India aims to foster a collaborative environment for AI entrepreneurs and innovators from diverse backgrounds. The awards ceremony recognized the efforts of startups contributing to responsible AI, with Qure.ai emerging as a standout in the field of medical imaging AI.
