India and Japan reinforced their bilateral healthcare collaboration at the 3rd Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) on Healthcare held at Bharat Mandapam. The meeting, held under the India Japan Memorandum of Cooperation in Healthcare and Wellness, was co chaired by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and Japan’s Minister in charge of Healthcare Policy Kimi Onoda, marking the third high level review mechanism between the two countries in the health sector.
The deliberations focused on key priority areas including non communicable diseases (NCDs), digital health, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. NCDs account for nearly 63% of total deaths in India, making prevention and early screening a shared priority. India highlighted its scalable healthcare initiatives, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which aims to build a nationwide interoperable digital health ecosystem, while Japan showcased its advancements in AI enabled healthcare technologies and integrated care systems.
Both sides also emphasized strengthening pharmaceutical manufacturing and resilient supply chains, with India being one of the largest global suppliers of generic medicines, contributing nearly 20% of global exports by volume. Discussions further included capacity building through joint training programs, research collaborations, and exchange of healthcare professionals to enhance skill development and knowledge sharing.
Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava noted that the Joint Committee serves as a crucial platform for sustained dialogue and policy alignment. The meeting concluded with both countries expressing commitment to expanding cooperation in digital health, innovation, and healthcare infrastructure, providing renewed momentum to the India Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
