A national-level football player from Manipur Ms Madhabi Devi would have lost her football career forever due to severe injuries in her knee. The injuries caused by a sporting event had dislocated her right knee and her ligaments were torn badly. Thanks to advancements in medicine, high-end all-inside anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) saved her career and after rehabilitation, she was back to the field in the quickest possible time – six weeks. Naveen Kumar from Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), is an International Judo Player and he also underwent a successful ACL surgery. Not only Naveen &Madhabi but international Judo players Sarabjit Singh from Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), National Taekwondo player Ankit and bodybuilder Manthan are among those who underwent ACL surgeries in the last 6-9 months.

but nearly 100 people, in the last 6-9 months, Sports including 20 national and international level players from India and overseas and armed services who suffered severe injuries underwent the advanced procedure. After surgery and world-class rehabilitation, they all got back to their field and service within three months.

“The entire career is at stake once a sportsperson gets injured. Early recovery is the key to getting back on the field to resume sports activities. Severe sports injuries are career-threatening. We have treated nearly 25 professional national and international level sportspersons mainly from contact sports like Judo, Wrestling, and Football, among others. There were nearly 80 patients from Indian Army and other armed forces also. We did All-Inside ACL surgeries with internal dressing/ bracing,” said Dr Vivek Mahajan, Orthopedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon, ISIC.

“Our primary aim was to combine advanced surgery with our world-class rehabilitation program with state-of-the-art facilities to get them back to the field at the earliest. Usually, patients with severe sports injuries take 9-12 months to recover after the surgery. We perform this advanced surgery without metallic screws which takes time and at a later stage their removal is also necessary. Finally, the surgery is followed by best-in-class rehabilitation where our trained physiotherapists, with Master’s Degrees, help patients recover quickly,” added Dr Vivek Mahajan.

The expertise and efficacy of ISIC’s treatment can be judged by the fact that after six weeks of the ACL surgery, Sarabjit Singh was not only able to represent SSB in a national level tournament- All India Police Judo Cluster- in New Delhi but also won Silver Medal. Now, he is all set to participate in an international Judo event in Canada.

Expressing gratitude towards ISIC, SSB’s Naveen Kumar – International Judo Player said, “Both his professional and sporting careers were at stake. But Indian Spinal Injuries Centre’s highly experienced team got us back on the sports in the earliest possible time. Advanced Rehab helped us in quick recovery after the procedure.”

Apart from the national level soccer player, ISIC treated two Judo players who represent India. There are several wrestlers who went back to their sporting arena after undergoing world-class treatment and rehabilitation. “Not only Indian sportspersons, but we also performed high-end surgeries for professional players from Nigeria and Somalia who suffered severe sports injuries and needed early recovery to get back to their sporting arena.” said Dr Vivek.

Ms Sugandh Ahluwalia, Chief Strategy Officer, ISIC said, “Young sports persons getting injured is disappointing. Due to severe injuries, sometimes they feel that their sports career has come to an end.  With precision and expertise, our highly trained and qualified surgeons have been reconstructing ACL. It is a bone/joint preserving procedure. Post surgeries, systematic rehabilitation is carried out to resolve all complications.”

“Under our orthopaedic services, we offer end-to-end treatment facilities, which includes computer assisted hip, knee, and shoulder replacement besides other medical services. The Department’s subspecialties include Sports medicine – Arthroscopy.  Our Sports medicine centre is well-equipped to perform highly specialized procedures for reconstruction and recovery. The Institute comes as a boon to young sportspersons who unfortunately face severe joint injuries that keep them away from the field,” added Sugandh Ahluwalia.

“I initially thought my injurie is career-threatening and I will not be able to play again. Now I am back on the field after six weeks of the ACL surgery. I am very grateful to ISIC and to the highly experienced Dr Mahajan and his team,” said Ms Madhabi.

The cases of sports injuries are rising in the country and with advanced treatment such as Joint preservation available at ISIC, sportspersons have plenty of scope to overcome their problems and get back to the field again with early recovery.
