West Bengal is expected to witness a major boost in its healthcare sector after the Centre approved nearly ₹3,000 crore for improving medical infrastructure and expanding public healthcare services across the state. Along with this, Ayushman Bharat health insurance cards are likely to start reaching beneficiaries from July, according to Suvendu Adhikari.
The announcement is being seen as an important step towards improving healthcare access, especially for economically weaker families and people living in rural areas. The funds are expected to be used for upgrading hospitals, improving medical facilities, strengthening healthcare services, and increasing the availability of doctors and healthcare staff across the state.
Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), eligible families receive health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh annually for hospitalization and treatment. The scheme is currently one of the largest government-backed healthcare programs in the world, covering crores of beneficiaries across India.
Officials have also indicated that the state may extend healthcare benefits to more than one crore migrant residents living in West Bengal. This move could help many low-income families access affordable treatment and reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses, which continue to be a major concern for households across the country.
The healthcare revamp is also expected to focus heavily on recruitment of doctors, nurses, and paramedical workers. Public health experts have repeatedly pointed out that improving healthcare manpower remains one of the biggest challenges in India’s healthcare system, particularly in district and rural hospitals.
Healthcare analysts believe the ₹3,000 crore allocation could help improve emergency services, diagnostic facilities, hospital infrastructure, and healthcare accessibility in several underserved regions of the state. The Ayushman Bharat rollout is also expected to make cashless treatment more accessible for thousands of families.
With rising healthcare demand and increasing pressure on public hospitals, the initiative is being viewed as a significant step towards strengthening West Bengal’s healthcare system and improving access to affordable treatment for citizens across the state.
