The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) has announced the development of a groundbreaking and cost-effective treatment for gallbladder cancer, offering improved outcomes for patients. This advancement is particularly significant for regions like northern India, where gallbladder cancer prevalence is notably high.

The innovative regimen combines chemotherapy and radiotherapy, effectively doubling the life expectancy of patients compared to existing treatments. This approach not only enhances survival rates but also reduces the financial burden on patients, making it a viable option for a broader population.

Professor Sushma Agrawal of the Radiotherapy Department at SGPGI led the research team behind this development. She stated, “Our new treatment protocol has shown promising results in clinical trials, offering hope to patients who previously had limited options.”

The treatment involves a specific sequence and dosage of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, tailored to target gallbladder cancer cells more effectively while minimizing side effects. This method has been tested in clinical settings, demonstrating a significant improvement in patient outcomes.

Gallbladder cancer is known for its aggressive nature and poor prognosis, often diagnosed at advanced stages due to subtle early symptoms.
