Metabolism is often blamed when people struggle to lose weight or maintain a healthy body composition, but experts say the science behind metabolism is far more complex than many common myths suggest. New research continues to highlight how metabolism influences body weight, energy balance, and long-term health outcomes.

 

Metabolism refers to the series of chemical processes through which the body converts food and beverages into energy required for essential functions such as breathing, circulation, digestion, cell repair, and physical activity. The number of calories the body burns while performing these basic functions is known as the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which accounts for approximately 60–70% of daily energy expenditure in most adults.

 

Contrary to popular belief, experts say metabolism alone is rarely responsible for significant weight gain. Factors such as age, genetics, muscle mass, hormone levels, sleep quality, diet, physical activity, and overall lifestyle all play important roles in determining body weight.

 

Individuals with higher muscle mass typically burn more calories at rest because muscle tissue requires more energy than fat tissue. This is one reason why strength training and regular physical activity are often recommended as part of healthy weight management strategies.

 

The issue is increasingly important as obesity rates continue to rise globally. According to the WHO, more than 1 billion people worldwide are living with obesity. Excess body weight is associated with an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, certain cancers, and other chronic health conditions.

 

Healthcare experts emphasize that sustainable weight management is best achieved through balanced nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and long term lifestyle changes rather than relying on “metabolism boosting” products or fad diets.

 

Recent studies also suggest that poor sleep, chronic stress, and sedentary behaviour can negatively affect metabolic health, contributing to weight gain and metabolic disorders. Maintaining healthy eating habits and engaging in regular physical activity remain among the most effective ways to support metabolic function.

 

As awareness around obesity and metabolic health grows, experts say understanding how metabolism works can help individuals make informed decisions about diet, exercise, and overall wellbeing, ultimately supporting healthier lifestyles and better long term health outcomes.
