Many people suffer from knee pain, back pain or joint stiffness and learn to live with it. Many assume this is a normal part of ageing and get used to the discomfort. But these early signs could be the body’s way of telling us our joints need attention and may also be an early sign of some serious joint damage.

Today, Indians are living longer than ever before. But living longer should also mean living healthier. Nearly 1 in 2 adults are not active enough, and around 1 in 4 people aged 15-49 are overweight or obese. Both factors increase stress on the knees and hips. Orthopaedic specialists are witnessing a significant rise in joint-related problems among younger individuals. While such conditions were once more common among people in their 40s and above, today many patients begin experiencing symptoms in their 30s, and in some cases even in their mid-to-late 20s.

Vitamin D deficiency, which is increasingly common among Indians, can weaken bones and muscles and make individuals more prone to injuries. Combined with sedentary lifestyles, obesity, poor posture, prolonged sitting, and sports-related injuries, these factors are contributing to a growing burden of joint problems among younger adults. The good news is that timely intervention can often help manage these conditions without the need for surgery.

Early signs you shouldn’t ignore

  • Pain or stiffness that lasts more than 2-4 weeks.
  • Swelling after activity or by day’s end.
  • Difficulty climbing stairs.
  • Squatting, or sitting cross-legged.
  • Recurrent “sports niggles” that never fully settle.
  • A feeling of the knee “giving way,” catching, or locking.

Many people wait until the pain is unbearable before going to the doctor. The condition may have worsened considerably by that time, making treatment more difficult. An earlier diagnosis allows doctors to detect the problem sooner and prescribe treatments that can slow joint damage and help you continue to move.

Why Early Treatment Makes a Difference

A common misconception is that joint pain inevitably leads to surgery. Many orthopaedic conditions can be effectively managed in their early stages through non surgical treatment. In fact, most orthopaedic disorders can be initially managed without surgery. Physiotherapy, rehabilitation, weight management, strengthening exercises, lifestyle changes, sports medicine interventions and bone health assessments can often achieve pain relief, improved movement and slow disease progression.

The focus today is on joint preservation, on protecting and preserving the natural joint for as long as we can. Early intervention can help many patients postpone surgery or avoid it altogether.

Taking Charge of Joint Health

Robotic assisted joint replacement is changing surgery by giving surgeons ultra‑precise tools. The robot doesn’t operate on its own; the surgeon is always in control. Using a 3D map of your joint, the system helps plan and place the implant with greater accuracy. For many patients, that can mean better alignment, less pain after surgery, less blood loss, and a faster recovery.

But not every joint problem needs an operation. When issues are caught early, many can be managed with physiotherapy, rehab, exercise, weight management, and simple lifestyle changes. Joint preservation programmes focus on finding problems early and keeping you mobile for as long as possible. As people live longer, protecting joint health is essential for staying active and independent. Don’t ignore ongoing pain. Seeing a doctor early can make a big difference to your long term outcomes.
